Born in Tulcea, Romania , Luiza Zan is one of the most prominent voices of Romanian jazz. With virtuosity and elegance, her voice warm and imposing slightly knocks down the barrier imposed by patterns and preconceptions.

She won many prizes in national jazz competitions, her passion for competing leading hear to the prestigious and undeniable much deserved Second Prize in June 2014 at Shure Jazz Voice Competition inside of Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland, which is the oldest festival in Europe and one of the most acclaimed in Europe.

Passionate and affectionate, lively and sympathetic. Such could be described in few words Luiza’s music. New jazz inspired by Billie Holliday, Ella Fitzgerald, Kurt Elling, Dianne Reeves and especially Nat “King” Cole. Soul & Funk inspired by Aretha Franklin, Chakka Khan, Erykah Badu. Hip hop & R & B inspired by D’Angelo, Angie Stone, Bilal. All being traits of a voice full of strength and feelings.

She wrote film music for productions such “Starfruit”, “Merry Circus” (HBO) and “Maria” (nominated for “best documentary” at Locarno Festival in March 2013). She wrote theater music – for the show Scourge, directed by Radu Afrim and played at the National Theatre of Bucharest, being also a protagonist – and for the show Three Fractures, also directed by Radu Afrim, played at the Andrei Muresanu Theatre, in which Luiza Zan performs live during the entire show.
